For the love of hills

The old man listened! It stopped raining, oh boy did it ever! The sun and heat were going full strength this morning. When I finally got my butt out the door, at about 11:15, the temperatures had to have been hovering in the high teens, if not the 20s (keep in mind I was running, my temperature gage may have been a little skewed).
The run felt good, it was a fairly hilly route right from the get-go (can’t really avoid hills in New West) so I wanted to go slow and really work on my form and not burn all of my energy on the first hill. I felt pretty good the whole way, and fairly loose, except for the front of my left thigh which was tight to beat all hell, and somewhat unexplainable given that I haven’t done much in the last few days. Maybe it was the heels I was wearing last night … or maybe I’m just getting old 🙁

TODAY’S RUN:

  • 11 a.m. BG before: 7.2 ***
  • Distance: 5.71 km
  • Time: 40:49
  • Average pace: 7:09 km/h
  • 10 minutes yoga: pigeon, plank, lunge, child’s pose
  • 20 minutes miracle balls (to ease the achyness in my hip)
  • 12:15 p.m. BG after 16.1

*** I tested my blood glucose at about 10:15 and they were 7.7, so I had a granola bar that I didn’t bolus for. But then it took me awhile to get ready, and so I tested my blood sugars again just before heading out the door to make sure they had slightly risen; they didn’t. They had gone down to 7.2, and because it was a fairly short run, I wasn’t taking my glucometre (which tests my blood sugars) or sugar tablets with me and I didn’t want to risk it so I had a quarter of a cup of orange juice before heading out – apparently a quarter too much! They were 16.1 after the run – EEK!!!

A lot of my shorter runs these days (the three to four km runs) have usually been along the New West Quay, which is really easy for me as it’s pretty much right outside my door – no driving involved! And it’s a fairly flat run, which, as mentioned, in New West is practically non-existent, so it’s great for runners like me coming back from injury. And the beauty all along the boardwalk is breathtaking.
So, after telling you about the run over the last couple of weeks, I figured I’d change it up a bit and show you the run:

Oh, and the Indian food last night, SO GOOD! However, I massively under bolused. We ordered a bunch of appetizers to share between the five of us (butter chicken, curry chicken, something rice related, something lamb-a-licious and something to do with eggplant (which was really yummy) and naan bread too). I had my Calorie King book with me (does anyone else feel odd whipping that thing out in public … I swear I was more comfortable giving myself needles in public than I am flipping the pages of that book … could have something to do with the name), but the small selection of Indian cuisines in it, aside from the naan bread and butter chicken didn’t really cover what we had ordered, so it was pretty much a guessing game. I bolused for 65 carbs, but my blood sugars shot up four digits within two hours, so I had to do a couple of insulin corrections to get it back down again. But hey, I’m still learning. I’m bound to figure it out someday … I hope!

Let me be the first to comment!!! What the hell does bolus mean!!? If you’re going to use these smartypants words, you’re going to have to attach a non-smartypants translation.
I was going to ask where you went that you had to wear heels, but you answered that burning question later in the blog. I don’t mean to be contrary (critical) but wouldn’t sandals have been more more appropriate for an INDIAN restaurant?
But WHAT the HELL do I know!!? Hamsters have more of a social life than I do!! Not that I’m complaining, given the bags I would have to socialize with!!
I gotta say I was touched by your description of the world around you when you run …
    You ARE a princess 🙂

    1. Bolus = insulin … I actually had no idea what it meant until I went onto the insulin pump, and it would drive me nuts when people would talk about it cause I had no idea what they were talking about, and now look at me, I’m doing the same thing … guess that means I’m in the club, hey 🙂

  2. I was going to ask the same thing as Freeman. Of course I was going to be much more polite about it.

  3. One more question. Why do they call insulin bolus? Is it an acronym? A latin root word?

    Urban dictionary suggests that in addition to meaning a dose of insulin it means;
    The collective noun for wankers.
For example, “My career was brought down by a bolus of wankers.”

    1. Leave it to a professor to get all latin root word on me 🙂 I have no idea why they call it bolus. Before I went on the pump, we just called it insulin … fast-acting insulin or short-acting insulin … now it’s just one insulin, which technically is the fast-acting insulin. I’m gonna find out for you though – but NOT because you called me a wanker!
