The June Babies

Today is one of my most favourite days of the year – and it’s not even my birthday. But it is my big brother Matt’s, which means mine is just three days away! Let the countdown begin! I LOVE MY BIRTHDAY!!!

The June Babies 2002: Matt (June 2) Cory (June 15) Me (June 5)

June was a pretty busy month for my mom, with three of her four kids all having birthdays within 13 days of each other, starting with Matt’s, then mine, then my oldest brother Cory’s. Matt is exactly two years and three days older than me, and for the first several years of our lives, we shared birthday parties, which to this day, I have no idea how my mom managed with that many kids terrorizing her house. There were a few years – the sleepover years – when we had our own parties, but once we grew out of those, we were back to sharing our birthday cakes and our birthday get togethers and our birthday love. And over the years, I’ve had tons of people comment on how we must have hated sharing that special day, but I never did. I loved sharing my birthday with my big brother – and I still do.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MATT! LOVE YOU TO PIECES!

He was protective even back then.

But today wasn’t just about birthdays, it was also a day for graduations. My two oldest nieces, who were more like little sisters to me growing up (I was 12 and 13 when they were born) graduated from college tonight. I had always promised my oldest niece, Jessica, that I would be at her high school graduation, as she had been at mine. But when she graduated, I was in Florence, and couldn’t exactly jet set back home. And so I made a point of being there tonight. And my goodness, it was such a special moment to first see Courtney walk across the stage, and then Jessica right behind her. A proud auntie tear (or two) was so wanting to break free.

But seriously, you give props to grandma, but not your favourite auntie? What’s up with that 😉

“The girls” were like my real-life dressup dolls! (left, Jessica. right, Courtney)
And look at them now – college graduates! (left, Courtney. right, Jessica.)

And if I wasn’t busy enough, singing an out-of-tune Princess Happy Birthday to my big brother (a tune that once made my now four-year-old nephew burst into tears) and attending my amazing nieces’ college graduations, I also had to fit in a run – it was National Running Day after all!

I packed my bag before leaving for work this morning, and I really have no idea what I was thinking. I could hear the rain pelting against the windows, and yet I still only packed a pair of shorts, a short-sleeved shirt, socks, a sports bra, and shoes. No long-sleeved top, no sleeves, no pant shorts. And that’s not all I left behind: I had no Garmin, no Road ID, no iPod. Apparently, I was going all old school tonight … and getting soaked while doing it!

TONIGHT’S RUN:

  • 5 p.m. BG before: 8.1 (Taste of Nature bar, Himalayan Goji Summit Bar, .85 units bolus)
  • Distance: 3.25 km (Teenaged Wasteland Route)
  • Time: 23 minutes
  • 5:45 p.m. BG after: 3.3 (apparently I had too much bolus)

I ran right after work, and because I had to get to the graduation ceremony right away, I didn’t have time for dinner, and didn’t end up eating until after 9 p.m. Luckily I had my granola bar.

What sorts of emergency food supplies do you keep in your car?
