Malls, bridges and deathly hallows

Finally! After more than six months of yearning and two months of harassing the employees and the big bosses too, I finally got me an iPhone 4 this weekend – but not without having to make sacrifices first.

My desire for an iPhone took having to get up at 7 a.m. yesterday morning (which is far too early) leave the house a half hour later sans shower, stand in a line outside the Apple store for an hour before it opened, with 10 people in front of me, 20 people behind me, and no idea whether I’d get an appointment or not, finally being granted one for 11:30, which meant I was stuck in the mall for two more hours! Have I mentioned how much I hate malls? (Luckily I brought my book.) I also had to endure a one-sided conversation with a slimy guy who thought he was all that; he didn’t seem to clue in that my eyes glued to my book and my non-communicative grunts meant I had no interest in talking to him … it took sticking my Blackberry (worst phone EVER!) to my ear to ditch him. And then, just when I thought the sacrifices were complete, and I could enjoy reading my book, a kid walked right in front of the bench I was seated at and full-on started hurling. Ewww! But in the end, I got to say, it was all worth it – I GOT MY iPHONE!!!

And to celebrate, Mario and I went for a run in the afternoon 😀

YESTERDAY’S RUN:

  • 2:30 p.m. BG before: 9.9
  • Temp basal: -70 per cent
  • Distance: 5.80 km running + 1 km of warm-up/cool-down
  • Average pace: 6:41 km/min
  • Time: 38:45
  • 3:30 p.m. BG after: 4.2

After lunch runs are not generally a time I like to run. I much prefer to run before or after breakfast, or before or after dinner. But because I was held up for hours getting the iPhone, I didn’t get home until close to 2 p.m. and hadn’t yet had lunch, so I had to make an exception. My blood sugars before I ate lunch were 11.8 and about half hour later they were 9.9. Knowing my body, I figured they would continue to plummet with the run so I dropped my basal down drastically by 70 per cent (usually I drop it down to 50 per cent before a run) and it’s a good thing I did given that my BG was borderline after the run.

We ran out to Queensborough and back, but poor Mario, it seems I forgot that he’s not a regular runner and has only ever run a maximum of 3.5 km at one time. By the time we got to Queensborough, his energy seemed to be fading, and as we passed the Sikh Temple which was emanating scrumdiliumptious Indian food smells, I thought I was going to lose him to the temple for sure 😀 But no, he persevered, actually he more than persevered, he did awesome!

After the run, Mario headed to the city to meet up with some friends, and I headed to the theatre to get me a Harry Potter fix. I went into the Deathly Hallows Part 1 not with great expectations. I’ve been quite critical of the Harry Potter movies from Day 1, especially the third movie – Prisoner of Azkaban – which was my favourite book of the series; I thought they brutalized it. So it was a much welcomed and great surprise when I fell in love with this movie instantly. It held true to the book, had all the elements of a great movie, it made me laugh, it freaked me out, and I even got somewhat weepy in parts. And the most telling aspect of how great a movie this was, I had no idea it was 2.5 hours long! I am not a fan of movies that are longer than 1.5 hours, but the Deathly Hallows didn’t feel like it was that long at all. In fact, I didn’t want it to end, and I’m actually thinking of going back to the theatres for a second viewing, which I have never been compelled to do with any other movie. That’s how good it was!

Which Harry Potter movie is your favourite?

  1. Hey Katie…

I’m curious if you’ll recommend a running app for your iPhone. I just downloaded RunKeeper Free (there’s also a paid version) and am going to try it out the next time I go for a run.

Apps are cool if they are well designed/useful. I wonder if you’ve looked into any diabetic apps for tracking blood sugar/eating/etc.

I’d bet there’s even apps out there that would somehow integrate with posting to facebook/wordpress for some of the things you’d be interested in sharing…

  2. Wow!! Ya know, I was gonna post my usual sarcastic (ie useless) comment on your blog until I read Ryan’s post – he actually had something USEFUL to say, about the apps for your new iPhone!! Hats off to Ryan. However, I’m still stumped for something useful to say … so I’ll just add that your blog question assumes EVERYONE has seen a Harry Potter movie. Which I haven’t, and which I never intended to do. However, I gotta say, it is quite some recommendation that you actually sat through a flick longer than 90 minutes. So I’m gonna rent the first Potter movie – and see if I don’t lose my popcorn 🙂

  3. I am officially the last person I know to have an iPhone. Damn Verizon.

I like all of the HP movies, but the 3rd one is brilliant… I love how dark it is!

  4. Sorry Katie…you are not the last person to get an iPhone. I don’t have one and neither does Pete so there are at least two people in your world that haven’t crossed to the dark side yet. 🙂
