Equating the blogiversary

I think I may have finally figured out a math equation, and it maybe one of the most important math equations of my life to date, well my running life that is:

Sunday breakfast + bolus – basal + long slow distance run = perfect BG!

I’ve somewhat been following the words of Pumping Insulin’s chapter on exercise. I say somewhat because a) it’s kind of confusing as they only list advice for people who are 100, 150 or 200 pounds, none of which I fall into which requires even more mathematical equations and b) because I just don’t agree with everything it suggests I do with my body.

So here’s the equation I used:
(total carbs) – (hours of exercise) + (additional carbs required) = (bolus)
My Sunday breakfast consisted of 71 grams of carbs, and I was to be on the road for at least two hours:
71g – 40 per cent = 43 grams of carbs = 2.35 units bolus.

The book also noted that given the amount of time I was to be on the road, I would need an additional 60 grams of carbs that did not require a bolus. My breakfast took care of almost 30 grams of those carbs (the subtracted 40 per cent) and my GU gels (one for every 45 minutes) at 20 grams of carbs each, took care of the rest. And the result, so close to being perfect. (My favourite math teacher (never thought I’d be combining those words) who I have on speed dial for work would be so proud ;))

SUNDAY’S RUN:

  • 8 a.m. BG before: 6.7
  • Temp. basal: -30 per cent (which I inputted an hour before the run)
  • Distance: 23 km
  • Average pace: 7:09 min/km (lsd)
  • Average heart rate: 153 bpm
  • Time: 2:48:18
  • @45 minutes: GU gel. @1:00 BG: 6.8. @90 minutes: GU gel.
  • 12 p.m. BG after: 8.9

In other news, Happy Blogiversary To Me!!! (Actually, it was yesterday.) So one year ago I started this blog as way of keeping me on track as I trained for my very first marathon, and also to give me another writing outlet other than the writing I do for work, and to get free stuff (hey, let’s be honest here, what blogger doesn’t want free stuff?) And seeing as how I’ve gone all mathematical in this here post, let’s take it a step further and bring out the statistics:

In one year, I have written 239 posts, generated 628 comments, attracted 14,852 hits, and on my most popular day, which just so happened to be my post-marathon report, I had a whopping 156 views! And for that, I thank all of you 😀

Here are a few of my favourite posts of the last year:

A bib too far (Oct. 12)
Princess beginnings (Oct. 21)
The cold and the cobbles (Oct. 26)
Hangover and out (Jan. 2)
Evil Pace Bunny (March 13)

And this, my friends, is what it’s all about:
