Lost

So, uhm, I kind of, sort of, maybe lost a fellow runner yesterday between kilometres 29 and 32. Oops. Note to self, I am a follower NOT a leader.

Unlike the last few weeks of running solo on Sundays, I decided to join my favourite running chick and Rose. And for the most part, aside from my tender foot pads to which I blame my newer, not-quite-pounded-in-enough shoes, I was feeling pretty awesome fitness and injury wise on the hilly route. My ankles were fine, my hips were fine, my mind was fine. And so, when my favourite running chick increased the pace of our long SLOW distance run in the last 5 km, to between a 5:30 and 6:00 minutes per km clip, I was game. The two of us were so focused on our speed and our form and pushing our legs and our brains forward, we completely lost track of the fact Rose was no longer at our heels until we arrived at our end location. We waited and waited and waited, we stretched, we waited, we paced, we waited, we worried, we waited. About 15 minutes passed before my favourite running chick hopped in her car to search for Rose.  I stayed in the lot feeling completely helpless.

Thankfully Rose was fine. Turns out she tacked on a few extra kilometres when she made a wrong turn, and because she didn’t have her Garmin with her she had no indication she was going further than she needed to. As soon as I saw her hop out of the car, I breathed a sigh of relief. Phew, I thought, while they may never let me in the lead again, they will let me run with them again, and that’s what matters … oh and that Rose was safe too, definitely matters!

YESTERDAY’S RUN:

  • 7:20 a.m. BG before: 6.9 (2 Sharkies)
  • Temp. basal: -50 per cent
  • Distance: 32 km
  • Average pace: 6:43 min/km
  • Time: 3:35:22
  • @45 min: Hammer Gel. @60 min. BG: 6.0 @90 minutes. eLoad gel. @2 hours BG: 7.8 @2:15 2 DEX
  • 11:30 a.m. BG after: 7.7

After the run I helped celebrate my favourite iron chickie’s birthday with a birthday party tea party. And my goodness, I do not know why us Canadian girls do not have more of these kind of parties … especially with a New Zealander doing all the baking 😉 This girl went all out in the baking realm with maple drizzled scones complete with maple cream; homemade lemon curd cupcakes with iron chickie designed butterflies; pumpernickel and smoked salmon with capers; finger sandwiches; and colourful fruit pot stickers! I’m pretty sure I ingested all the calories I burned on my run and then some! And the English black tea (of course it was English!) was served in beautiful, dainty tea cups passed down from her grandma.

It was such a lovely girl party, all of us around the table munching down on good eats and chatting and giggling away. We really should do more, if for no other reason than those maple drizzled scones, yum!

Have you ever been to or held a tea party? What was your favourite part?

  1. Forget the tea party, how was running 32 km?!
I know you’ve done a marathon before so it’s no biggie probably for you. But I would surely have some crazy things to write about.
The most I’ve done is 30. I’m nervous about the 32km training runs for my marathon.
    holy crap you are SOLID!

  2. Glad you enjoyed the tea party! I’m thinking it will become and annual event! Can you please email me any photos you took? xx
