Where I belong

Forget dressing up as a princess; I’m already one of those. Forget Hermoine Granger’s book bags and wizardry outfits. Forget even painting my face Smurfette blue. This year for Halloween I dressed up as a marathoner, and took full opportunity to go trick-or-treating. And by trick-or-treating, I mean running of course.

Wait a sec, you’re thinking, she already told us this, yesterday, the day of. Yes, I did. But I did not tell you the significance of yesterday’s run.

Two things:
1) It was my first run since Tiffany.
2) It was Mario’s first run since the start of cycling season.

Let’s start with me first, because, well, I like to talk about me 😉

Before leaving the loft, Mario looked at me in my shorts and two technical shirts with concern all over his face. You do realize it’s cold out there, he said. I nodded. Like freezing cold, he said. I nodded again. He just shook his head; his attire had him dressed in a long sleeved shirt, gangster looking hoodie (hood up of course) and winter tights. We walked out the door, and sure enough, I was shivering, teeth chattering, freezing cold. I swear it took everything he had not to spit out an I told you so.

It was just supposed to be a light run, but because I was cold, and because maybe I had something to prove, I jetted out the gate with Mario calling behind “Hey! I haven’t run in months…”

It felt awesome. My legs were laughing up a storm as they pounded down the pavement; my face was smiling through the cool breeze; my heart beating with each step. And the scenery, oh my goodness, such a perfect night for us trick-or-treaters. The black sky was so clear with just a glimmer of pinkish orange off in the distance, and the moon so bright against the ripples in the river. This is where I belong.

And while Mario may not have the same sentiment towards running as I do (he still makes fun of us) he obviously saw the benefit of putting runs in last winter, as he was quite keen to get out again. Or, maybe it’s not the benefits he’s remembering, maybe it’s The Bet 😀

ps. my body temperature was perfect on the run; his was a little overheated by the end. But I bit my tongue, no I told you so from me, nope, not one 😀

November is diabetes awareness month (it’s not lost on me that it comes right after Halloween) and for more than 20 years it meant nothing to me. I figured I have diabetes, I already know about it, what more do I need to know, and why should I care to open others eyes to it. I’ve since changed that view.

So here’s what I’m going to do in honour of diabetes awareness: For every blog I post this month, I will post a picture showing diabetes in my life.

Diabetes Day No. 1: My monthly hemoglobin A1C test:

The hemoglobin A1C blood test checks average sugar levels in diabetics over a three-month period, and is a way of seeing how in control a person is with their diabetes. “Normal” people are between a 4.0-5.9 range. For us non-normal, a good range is under 7.0. (Mine hovers between 6.2 and 6.5)

Most diabetics get this test once or twice a year, but because I’m a bit of a control freak when it comes to my blood sugars, I convinced my doctor to set me up on a once-a-month testing regime. OCD much? Meh 😀

  1. Ah yes….The Bet. I remember it well. Good to read that you are back pounding the pavement like you should be.
