Prospect: lonely road

I should have known – I should have known! How can an inaugural marathon, in my hometown no less, possibly compare to a 40-year-old marathon in one of my most favourite cities that consistently brings out tens of thousands of people? It can’t. No possible way. Abbotsford is not Portland, not even close. So really, I shouldn’t have been too, too surprised that the upcoming marathon is turning out to be a bit of a, uhm, bush-league operation dare I say. I know I shouldn’t be hard on it, it’s in its first year, it’s raising money for a great cause, and I haven’t even run the blimy thing. It could be great for all I know. But, quite honestly, I was spoiled by Portland. Yes it rained like a bloody mofo, but the expo was pretty awesome and they really did treat you like a superstar as we should be […]

The Sami Salo of runners

Update on this week’s training: I haven’t done anything, nada, nothing, nil, zilch. In my defense, yesterday was technically a rest day, although I usually go to pilates, but because of Victoria Day, the pilates studio was closed, and today when I got to work, my first day back after two-weeks of holidays, I discovered I had a school board meeting tonight (which by the way I was so NOT happy about given that there was a Canucks playoff game on … this is the THIRD time the district has scheduled a meeting on significant playoff/olympic game nights! Forget that the meetings were scheduled a year in advance, they should have known, or at the very least, they should have rescheduled … so really, it’s not my fault if my stories end up with more Canuck’s highlights than school business; yes, I had my laptop with me … for note

In desperate need of advice…

Ohhh there were so many signs telling me to stay home, to not go for a run, to just stay in my pajamas, I’d be safer in my pajamas. But did I listen? Noooo. And what happens, just minutes after leaving the condo? I get dive-bombed by a bloody squawking crow – THREE TIMES!!! Here I was, minding my business, waiting for my Garmin to kick in while burping up garlic toast and potato salad and barbecued mushrooms, and lime tart from last night’s barbecue (Note to self, stuffing yourself to near puking the night before a run isn’t the wisest thing no matter how good the food is) when this bloody black thing swoops right next to my ear, like not even a pinky nail distance away, I could feel the brush of its feathers, that’s how close it was. I nearly jumped right out of my toes! But I

Good Life. Good Time.

Ahh Onterrible, we had such hopes for you, high hopes, you teased us with a sunny forecast, balmy weather even, you told me to leave the sweaters at home, to pack my bags full of spring skirts and no-sleeved shirts, and so I did. And then, practically the second we landed down in your land, you turned on us with a crack of thunder and five full days of rain, and not warm rain, oh no, you were filling our boots full of bitter, cold, nasty, miserable rain. And so, dear Onterrible, you shall continue to be … TERRIBLE!!! (Side note: when we landed in Vancouver yesterday afternoon, the sun was hot and blinding, and the Onterrible layers were fast shedding!) Mario should NOT still be wearing his wool hat in May! Despite the rain, there were still some pretty great moments to be had visiting with Mario’s family, and

Lost

So, uhm, I kind of, sort of, maybe lost a fellow runner yesterday between kilometres 29 and 32. Oops. Note to self, I am a follower NOT a leader. Unlike the last few weeks of running solo on Sundays, I decided to join my favourite running chick and Rose. And for the most part, aside from my tender foot pads to which I blame my newer, not-quite-pounded-in-enough shoes, I was feeling pretty awesome fitness and injury wise on the hilly route. My ankles were fine, my hips were fine, my mind was fine. And so, when my favourite running chick increased the pace of our long SLOW distance run in the last 5 km, to between a 5:30 and 6:00 minutes per km clip, I was game. The two of us were so focused on our speed and our form and pushing our legs and our brains forward, we completely
