The princess and the speed

That’s it, I need a vacation, like now. My brain is seriously catatonic, I kid you not. It’s like it’s in a perpetual daze, I’m constantly forgetting things, important things, like for instance in less than a 24 hour period, I forgot to test my blood sugars before going to bed last night which I always do to ensure there won’t be any un-welcomed overnight surprises and then tonight after my run, I forgot to test my blood sugars and set a post-run temporary basal. Seriously, I need a vacation! Good thing I’m going on one starting Friday! Woohoo 😀 TONIGHT’S RUN: 6 p.m. BG before: 6.5 Temp basal: -50 per cent Distance: 7 km Average pace: 6:15 min/km Average heart rate: 168 bpm Time: 43:48 8 p.m. BG (1 hour) after: 4.1 I joined my favourite running chick and Little Miss Speedy Gonzalez for a good-clip tempo run tonight. Stop and smell the … dandelions?

Forget roses, forget lilies, forget sunflowers and buttercups, I love dandelions. Always have. As a kid I’d run through fields of dandelions, taking in their bright yellow sunshine hue, and that pungent spring scent, and the second I saw the ones in their last days, I was the first to multiply them with a quick blow (and a wish) of their diminished petals. I am one of those people who, if I had a lawn, the bylaw officers would be pounding my door down, because there is no way I’d be mowing it – it would be a field of beautiful, contagious dandelions. Heck, mine and Mario’s first dance at our wedding was to Dandelion by Audioslave. Love them! And recently, with the prevalence of spring upon us, I’ve been reminded of another greatness that is the dandelion. Its scent doesn’t make me want to hurl while running! It’s true,

Beaten physically, mentally and near fatally

So, do you think runners are like cats? Do we get nine lives too? After my last run I’m sure hoping so, because my one life is fast diminishing. Two weeks ago I was faced with a near miss as a pickup truck came screeching up behind my favourite running chick and I and proceeded to smash into a vehicle half a small condo distance away. Pretty scary right, but nothing compared to what happened to me on Saturday. At 25 km into my 29 km run, I was pretty beaten up physically and mentally, but I could still decipher between the walk signal and the bright red don’t-you-dare-cross-this-damn-street signal. So when I saw that hand, I waited, and waited, and waited. With my leg muscles flaring up and seizing, it felt like forever before that light changed, but being the good runner that I am, I waited. When finally

Asphalt yes, cement no, trails maybe

Timing is everything. On the drive to my brother’s after work I was cursing myself for choosing to run today instead of yesterday. The monsoon last night was nothing compared to the golf ball sized hail smashing down on my window today. And last night I had my jacket with me, but tonight, as my eyes started spinning watching that hail, I realized my jacket was hanging on the banister at home – an hour away. Oh crud. And it’s not like I could just shirk this run, I had to run, I haven’t run since Saturday, I needed to get at least one mid-week run in before Saturday’s long run. So, come hail, come monsoon, come thunder and lightening, I would be running. Ahh but my timing proved perfection. By the time I drove up to my brother’s house, the sun was shining and the dark clouds were a good
