Then and now

What I was doing 10 years ago: I was being startled awake by the phone ringing just before 7 a.m.. I remember thinking who the hell was calling that early as I stuffed my head under a pillow to muffle the sound. It was my moms. A minute later my big-big brother, who I lived with at the time, was banging on my bedroom door. I can still hear his voice. “Kate! Kate! You got to get up! You got to see this!”  The Twin Towers were on fire. Two planes had crashed through them. The world as we knew it would never be the same again. I couldn’t pull my eyes away. Not two weeks prior I had been in New York, I had got pictures of the towers, I had listened intently as a girlfriend of mine had pointed high up and told me the story of her […]

What the…?

No exercise. None. Nada. Zilch. No running. No cycling. No aqua jogging. No pilates. Period. What the…? Last night I sent my physio an email (an email he called ‘overly dramatic’ with a good-natured chuckle) somewhat concerned about the constant bruised-feeling in my inner knee. Within the contents of the email I may have described the feeling as a raging fireball rolling around in there that became 500 times worse after seeing the massage therapist. I wasn’t lying, I was just being descriptive is all. My moms always told me to use my words wisely. Had I written that my knee “hurt” or I was feeling “pain” do you really think he would have called me at 7:30 a.m. the following morning? Nope, I don’t think so. But he did call me; not with great news mind you. On my way to work, with my aqua jogging gear stashed in

Pain before gain

Note to self: Do not EVER plan an event. About a month ago I had organized a run for my girls and I along the Seawall. I even made a Facebook page of it! I hadn’t run with any of them in so long as we’re all on different training schedules and I figured it would be a great opportunity to bring us all together again. The event – Run with Royalty – was scheduled for Sunday. You will note, I did not run Sunday. That’s because I injured my knee; tweaked it two weeks prior to the run, full on injured it a week prior, thus causing me to cancel 🙁 With no running, I got lots of ‘artistic’ time on my hands (much to Mario’s chagrin I’m sure) 😉 I was mortified. Not because I couldn’t run necessarily, and not because I was worried that my training would be

One-fingered salute

It is truly amazing how unfocused or just plain ignorant drivers, cyclists and walkers can be. Mario and I went out for a bike ride around UBC, Stanley Park and Spanish Banks yesterday, which proved to be a rather busy, traffic-congested day. Wasn’t really much of a surprise given  that it was the unofficial second last day of summer. Not only were there eager students moving into residence, there were tons of families, couples and singles crowding the areas, wanting to get as much beach and sight-seeing time in as they possibly could before school starts up again. We were keen to catch the last rays of summer too. Mario and I were on high alert. Had we not been, had we been riding in la-la-land like so many of the other leisurely cyclists and others on the road, we more than likely would have been ending the ride on

Silver lining

Thirty four days. Thirty four hard, longing, obsessive, mood-swinging, shaky days. That’s how long I lasted. No chocolate for 34 days, but after the week I’ve had, the no-chocolate streak came to an end. And let me just say, that first bite was the most heavenly thing I’ve ever experienced. The chocolate oozed over my tongue, melted on my teeth, it’s nutty, raisin, cocoaness filled my senses. My eyes widened, my nose perked, my skin tingled, and my tongue, oh man did it taste. Heaven. One of the best, most delectable decisions I’ve made. Dear chocolate, I promise never to desert you again. Despite this week being a struggle almost from start to finish with blood sugar dramas and running injuries and work stresses, it hasn’t all been bad. In fact, there have been a few spectacular moments squeezed in there. On Saturday, my niece finally had her baby shower
