Damage done

Why is it when you get a paper cut, stinging lemon juice instantly finds its way inside? Or when you have a cavity, your tongue is constantly drawn to the aching decay? Or when you smoke yourself in the ankle so hard you draw blood, your shoed foot continues to do so until you’re belaboured with a nasty ass stress fracture? On Sunday, that oh-so-glorious run day, I did just that. Smoked my ankle. And oh man did it smart. For like half a minute I swear it felt as though a boulder had smashed down on it! But I refused to stop running. I wasn’t a baby, I was going to keep on going, wincing and all. Well, that first collision resulted in two more collisions, each more painful than the first. It wasn’t until I ended my run that I dare I looked at the damage done. It […]

The butt chronicles

Monday could have been a bad day, it had all the elements of being a super rotten day. After a restless night of tossing and turning, I woke up and before even moving, knew the pain in my butt had not gone away. In fact, it had intensified. Mario and I had planned on going for a ride that morning, but after more than an hour of icing it, rolling on the foam roller, lying on a tennis ball, and having two hot baths, I made the executive decision that my butt needed a day off from all exercise. And I was miserable, completely miserable. But an afternoon of walking along the beach in Steveston and filling up on frutti di bosco and sour apple sorbetto, my mood was lifted. Yep, my husband knows the way to my heart 😀 Dreaming of sorbetto… You know who else knows the way

Eat dirt!

Maybe screwing up the dates last week, and maybe getting a head start, and maybe battling the Grouse Grind in monsoon-like weather were the reasons for me totally rocking the mountain yesterday in near perfect Grind-climbing weather. OR maybe I’m just that awesome 😉 HIKE THE GROUSE GRIND WITH ICD TAKE 2: 9:30 a.m. BG before: 14.5 Temp. basal: zero Distance: 2.9 km, 2,830 stairs Elevation gain: 853 metres Time: 55:20!!! PERSONAL BEST BABY!!! 10:50 a.m. BG after: 13.5 BG correction: 2.15 units Did you see that finishing time? 55:20! One minute 18 seconds faster than my previous best three weeks ago, which was 37 seconds faster than my previous, previous best, and more than 20 minutes faster than when I first started climbing the Grind six years ago!. So what if I had feelings of upchucking, or had scratched the hell out of my hands, or looked as though

Getting a head start

The things I learned yesterday: If it’s pouring bathtubs of rain outside, stay home. If it’s pouring bathtubs of rain outside, and you do go out, pack a change of socks, shoes, and maybe even a towel or two. If it’s pouring bathtubs of rain outside, and you have a scheduled date, never ever leave the house without first double checking that you got the right date. When I woke up at 7 a.m. yesterday morning to get ready for the Grouse Grind, every bone in my body wanted to stay in bed, especially with the continuous rat-a-tat-tat of the rain I could hear outside. This was not optimum Grind-climbing weather. Sunny days, overcast days, a little sprinkle here and there, great. Monsoon, not so great. Had it been any other day, I would have bailed, said forget it, just wrapped my blanket around me and vegged on the couch

Giggling off the poppycock

You’ve got to be freaking kidding me! So, you know that dictionary of doctor talk I told you all about the other night, well turns out it was just a load of poppycock. Yes, poppycock! My soon-to-be super doctor extraordinaire diabetic chick translated the manual for me last night and I swear not even a minute in she was laughing, but it wasn’t a hearty laugh, it was more like a here we go again kind of laugh. She told me there was basically just one sentence in there I needed to know, which in human language said something to the effect of If you have type 1 diabetes and if you’re an endurance athlete, you’re pretty much hooped. Awesome. Translating the secret doctor code My soon-to-be doctor diabetic chick has seen these words before, many times. She tried doing a research paper on endurance sports for Type 1s, and
