The princess becomes the sloth

So, I really don’t have much to say because I’ve been totally slacking off, like 100 per cent since racing my brother on Sunday and since the marathon before that. No running. No cycling. No pilates. I was supposed to do pilates on Monday, but had to cancel because of the Stanley Cup finals, and I was supposed to do them on Thursday too, but again had to cancel because well, I spotted a few greys on my head (The horror! The horror!) and am in desperate need of some hair stylist tender loving chemical care. I suppose I could do pilates at home, or go aqua jogging at the pool, or go for a ride, but really, I just don’t want to. I’m kind of enjoying my evenings of no commitments, lounging on the couch, burying my nose in Tina Fey’s Bossy Pants biography, eating birthday ice cream cake […]

Goldilocks and the fear

Diabetes Lesson No. 941: Walking is exercise. After work I met up with my favourite ironchickie for a post-birthday (me) and post-half-ironman (her) walk along the dykes in the Valley. I had planned on testing my blood sugars before heading out, just as I do before all other exercise, but I think the excitement of seeing my dear friend combined with getting lost trying to find the parking lot, and coming across two toddler billie goats lounging in the middle of a dead end road (I kid you not, I thought they were dogs from afar, but as I got closer I saw their furry horns) completely threw me off. And it wasn’t until about 3.5 km into the 5 km walk, when I realized that I hadn’t tested my blood sugars and that I had also not stuffed any sugar-related goodies into my pocket, and that my legs were

Yellow tomatoes and purple potatoes

I don’t know about you, but when my birthday comes around, there’s a list of things I feel I shouldn’t have to do, like clean my bathroom, make the bed (thank you Mario), put gas in my car, and change my infusion. Unfortunately for me, yesterday, my birthday – the greatest day on Earth – was also infusion changing day. Ugh! But fortunately for me it was my birthday, and it totally lived up to its hype, it was a great, great, great day. Have I mentioned I love my birthday 😀 It was a day filled with sunshine and strawberry covered waffles, bike rides and farmers markets, presents, presents, presents, ice cream cake (obviously!), a little bit of France, a little bit of New York and a Bianchi too! … jersey that is … one step closer to having my very own beautiful Bianchi. Good golly, I thought I was

The Sami Salo of runners

Update on this week’s training: I haven’t done anything, nada, nothing, nil, zilch. In my defense, yesterday was technically a rest day, although I usually go to pilates, but because of Victoria Day, the pilates studio was closed, and today when I got to work, my first day back after two-weeks of holidays, I discovered I had a school board meeting tonight (which by the way I was so NOT happy about given that there was a Canucks playoff game on … this is the THIRD time the district has scheduled a meeting on significant playoff/olympic game nights! Forget that the meetings were scheduled a year in advance, they should have known, or at the very least, they should have rescheduled … so really, it’s not my fault if my stories end up with more Canuck’s highlights than school business; yes, I had my laptop with me … for note

In desperate need of advice…

Ohhh there were so many signs telling me to stay home, to not go for a run, to just stay in my pajamas, I’d be safer in my pajamas. But did I listen? Noooo. And what happens, just minutes after leaving the condo? I get dive-bombed by a bloody squawking crow – THREE TIMES!!! Here I was, minding my business, waiting for my Garmin to kick in while burping up garlic toast and potato salad and barbecued mushrooms, and lime tart from last night’s barbecue (Note to self, stuffing yourself to near puking the night before a run isn’t the wisest thing no matter how good the food is) when this bloody black thing swoops right next to my ear, like not even a pinky nail distance away, I could feel the brush of its feathers, that’s how close it was. I nearly jumped right out of my toes! But I
