Murder he wrote

I’m not a millionaire, not even close, I don’t have a life insurance policy, and until recently I was pretty sure Mario hadn’t secretly taken one out on me. But then there was yesterday: 80 km on a bike, 4 days after racing my half marathon, and 9 days before having to race my full marathon. Oh yes, there was a lot of cursing going on, some under my breath, and some quite clearly vocal. YESTERDAY’S RIDE: 10 a.m. BG before: 9.6 Temp. basal: -50 per cent Distance: 80 km Average speed: 20.8 km/hour Time: 3:48:00 @10 km BG: 8.0 @45 km BG: 4.9 (lunch, no bolus = big mistake!) @65 km BG: 14.4 (bolus 2.00 units) 3 p.m. BG after: 11.1 Temp. basal +50 per cent (1.5 hours) Because the sun was still shining yesterday and because Mario and I hadn’t been out on the bike in quite some […]

Lost

So, uhm, I kind of, sort of, maybe lost a fellow runner yesterday between kilometres 29 and 32. Oops. Note to self, I am a follower NOT a leader. Unlike the last few weeks of running solo on Sundays, I decided to join my favourite running chick and Rose. And for the most part, aside from my tender foot pads to which I blame my newer, not-quite-pounded-in-enough shoes, I was feeling pretty awesome fitness and injury wise on the hilly route. My ankles were fine, my hips were fine, my mind was fine. And so, when my favourite running chick increased the pace of our long SLOW distance run in the last 5 km, to between a 5:30 and 6:00 minutes per km clip, I was game. The two of us were so focused on our speed and our form and pushing our legs and our brains forward, we completely

Sleeping on the pineapple express

99 sheep jumped over the fence, 98 sheep jumped over the fence, 97 zzzzzzz. I am not much of a sleeper, never have been. I’ve counted sheep all the way down to the negative numbers, have tried to black out my brain, have tried an assortment of drugs (mostly in my teenage years) and have even resorted to stuffing a pillow over my head and hoping for the best, but for the most part, none of it works. On average, I get maybe 6 hours, if I’m lucky, in a night. But after last night, of which I got 10.5 full hours of sleep and even slept in, I’m thinking I may have found the miracle sleep deprivation cure: Tri Night! Now, before I continue, I must apologize to my dear husband, whose opinion I value so greatly and who in most cases I agree with whole heartedly, but who,

The princess and the speed

That’s it, I need a vacation, like now. My brain is seriously catatonic, I kid you not. It’s like it’s in a perpetual daze, I’m constantly forgetting things, important things, like for instance in less than a 24 hour period, I forgot to test my blood sugars before going to bed last night which I always do to ensure there won’t be any un-welcomed overnight surprises and then tonight after my run, I forgot to test my blood sugars and set a post-run temporary basal. Seriously, I need a vacation! Good thing I’m going on one starting Friday! Woohoo 😀 TONIGHT’S RUN: 6 p.m. BG before: 6.5 Temp basal: -50 per cent Distance: 7 km Average pace: 6:15 min/km Average heart rate: 168 bpm Time: 43:48 8 p.m. BG (1 hour) after: 4.1 I joined my favourite running chick and Little Miss Speedy Gonzalez for a good-clip tempo run tonight.

Stop and smell the … dandelions?

Forget roses, forget lilies, forget sunflowers and buttercups, I love dandelions. Always have. As a kid I’d run through fields of dandelions, taking in their bright yellow sunshine hue, and that pungent spring scent, and the second I saw the ones in their last days, I was the first to multiply them with a quick blow (and a wish) of their diminished petals. I am one of those people who, if I had a lawn, the bylaw officers would be pounding my door down, because there is no way I’d be mowing it – it would be a field of beautiful, contagious dandelions. Heck, mine and Mario’s first dance at our wedding was to Dandelion by Audioslave. Love them! And recently, with the prevalence of spring upon us, I’ve been reminded of another greatness that is the dandelion. Its scent doesn’t make me want to hurl while running! It’s true,
