Type 1 – RUNNING – superstars

BMO Vancouver half marathon, wow! This run was not about me, not about my racing goals, not about personal besting. It was about super freaking AMAZING diabetes awesomeness! When my fellow T-1 girlfriend, Reluctant Runner, texted me many months ago to tell me she was running the BMO half marathon, I was intrigued. You see, this girl, as the name of her blog indicates, is not overly in love with the running scene. She’s a superstar in the water and on the soccer field, but long-distance running, she does solely for her health, not endorphins. Her previous attempts at halves have been miserable: diabetes refused to cooperate, racing goals seemed to crumble every time she crossed the starting mat, and those hills, ohhh, they were more than just a prickle in her side, they were the devil incarnate. I mulled over her text for all of two seconds before the […]

This day…

Note: this post technically should have been published yesterday, but, well, I’m a new mom and it seems nothing gets done on time these days… it’s within the weekend though, so it still counts 😉 On this day five years ago, I was doing this: Paris: Kissing Oscar Wilde’s tombstone. On this day three years ago, I was doing this: Princess of Pavement’s Claustrophobic Half On this day two years ago I was doing this: Portland Marathon On this day one year ago I was doing this: Volunteering: Levi Leipheimer Gran Fondo On this day today, I was doing this: Walking along the boardwalk with my Little Ring snug against me. Today – and everyday – I am thankful for my health, my running, my goals, my travels, my parents biannual stuffing, and most importantly, my beautiful family. Happy Thanksgiving!

Rules are meant to be broken

Yesterday I ran, because that’s what I do, I am a running princess after all, but when I laced up my sneakers I was somewhat concerned, I always am after an extended break, and yesterday’s run was my first run in three weeks! Andddddd I pretty much broke all the rules. Slow pace? Not as slow as it should have been. Ten and ones? Yeahhhh, nope. 7 km max? nuh-uh to that one too. Oops… YESTERDAY’S COUNTRY RUN: 5:30 p.m. BG before: 10.0 Temp. basal: -50 per cent Distance: 9 km Average pace: 6:17 km/h Time: 56:36 6:45 p.m. BG after: 5.5 I may have got lost somewhat sidetracked along this never-ending dead-end road. When I hit the road for my “long” “slow” distance run – a day late – I hadn’t yet figured out a training schedule, and to be honest I still haven’t. If I were to follow

Refocusing

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! I am so excited!!! Ohmygawd so excited!!! Want to know why? Because it’s birthday ice cream cake month!!! June is hands down my most favourite month of the year, a month I prepare for for 11 straight months. With myself and two siblings sharing this birthday month, as well as my grandma and neice, and all but one of us loving Dairy Queen ice cream cake, you’ve kind got to train for it – that’s a lot of ice cream cake eating! What? Did you really think I ran those two marathons for my health? or because I actually love running for nearly 5 hours straight? Hell no! It’s all for the ice cream cake my friends! Happy almost birthday to me!!! FYI: This is NOT the optimal size! After writing my last post, I was reminded at just how amazing my blogging community is here. Every one of your

The princess and the speed

That’s it, I need a vacation, like now. My brain is seriously catatonic, I kid you not. It’s like it’s in a perpetual daze, I’m constantly forgetting things, important things, like for instance in less than a 24 hour period, I forgot to test my blood sugars before going to bed last night which I always do to ensure there won’t be any un-welcomed overnight surprises and then tonight after my run, I forgot to test my blood sugars and set a post-run temporary basal. Seriously, I need a vacation! Good thing I’m going on one starting Friday! Woohoo 😀 TONIGHT’S RUN: 6 p.m. BG before: 6.5 Temp basal: -50 per cent Distance: 7 km Average pace: 6:15 min/km Average heart rate: 168 bpm Time: 43:48 8 p.m. BG (1 hour) after: 4.1 I joined my favourite running chick and Little Miss Speedy Gonzalez for a good-clip tempo run tonight.
