Yertle the Turtle

I’m not gonna lie, that run I went on last night, that super short, super easy, loosen up the legs 3.5 km run, was scary as hell. In fact, could even be in my top 5 scary runs. It’s a run I’ve done hundreds of times, I could run it with my eyes closed, I could run it backwards, I could run it through the thick of snow, but last night the nerves in my belly felt as though they were embarking on their first marathon. I was practically pooping my pants! Can you feel the fear? Last night was my first outdoor run since falling flat on my face and spraining my shoulder two weeks ago. Sure I’ve done a couple treadmill runs, but before yesterday, nothing outdoors. And it just so happened, last night’s route was part of the same route we ran that evening. Ohhh the fond […]

Pop goes the shoulder

Hello pavement, meet my face… If it wasn’t so shocking or so extremely painful, I might have actually been laughing. We were on the homeward stretch of our 5 km evening run, about a kilometre away from completion, we were talking, I was feeling good, my calves were as loose as a wet noodle, I was getting ready to surge forward. And then… Big Ring had said something, but I couldn’t hear him, so I looked back in his direction, and by the time I had repositioned my head forward, it was too late. The toe of my shoe had fumbled over an elevated piece of cement and I was going down. Oh crud. Bad pavement! Bad! Bad! Bad! I had two choices: Put my hands flat down for support and risk breaking my wrist again, or go into an all out dive. I chose the latter. With my arms

Release me

This morning my alarm blasted at 4:30 a.m.. For some reason I had booked a physio appointment for 7 a.m. Take note, my physio is located in the valley. On a good day, that’s 45 minutes away, but more likely an hour away. I probably could have got away with another 15 minutes of sleep, but I did not want to take any chances with being late for this appointment. I’d been waiting three weeks for this date, there was no way I would screw it up by being late. I walked through the door and the first person I saw was Dear Physio. He had a quizzical look on his face, but I just figured it was early. I walked up to the receptionist. We don’t have you on the list, she says. What? I booked an appointment, I made it three weeks ago. She looks in her computer…

Germs be damned

Sometimes you just need a good rant. Following Tuesday’s blog blowup, my knee had no pressure tension on Wednesday, and guess where I was today: Back at the pool! Yippee! (Never once thought I’d be jumping for joy to be returning to the germ-infested pool, but these, my friends, are desperate days. Germs be damned.) When I felt no knee pressure yesterday, I was skeptical, but then when I woke up this morning to Day 2 of no knee pressure, I was ecstatic. So, I figured I’d head to the pool for aqua jogging, the least impactive workout on my list of workouts. I wasn’t sure how long I’d last, and I kept worrying that I’d feel a twang of pressure, but one lap, two laps, three laps, 25 laps later and no pressure. Yippee! So what does this mean? I’m coming back baby! But slowly. Very, very slowly. I’ll

Sunday bloody Sunday

Yesterday was a disastrous day for me on so many levels, and I’ll be honest, I didn’t want to write this post. I wanted to hide under my pillow and forget it never happened. But now, it’s truth time. Coming clean No. 1: Last week, in the last kilometre of my long run, I tweaked my knee. The pounding on the pavement proved too much for my legs, and my left hip once again got jammed so far up my back, it was as though my left leg was a bloody stump compared to my right. My physio yanked my hip back into place, did some fist kneading, and then put the ultrasound machine and ice on my knee to reduce the swelling. Within a day, everything was feeling back to normal. I took the week off from running and relied on the bike trainer and pilates for my fitness.
