She’s got the funk

I miss it like I miss Beverly Hills 90210 (oh yes, I do miss me a good Kelly Taylor and Dylan McKay fix). I miss it like I miss my fingers before they became tender diabetic pin cushions. I miss it like I miss the feeling of a really good book between my fingers. What is this I miss, you ask. My running, I miss it like you wouldn’t believe.

So why is it that I’m not running? Why do I continue to let the dust build up on my sneakers? Why do I spend all day indoors, when I could be out freeing my mind and my legs with a good 5 km run? Why did I angrily pack up my water bottles that were taunting me on the kitchen counter and store them in the bike room closet – out of sight, out of mind? Why?

I had every intention of going for a run this morning, just a quick jaunt down the quay and back to loosen my legs up and see where I was at. I wasn’t even planning on bringing the Garmin, just me and my sneakers were going to take to the pavement. But then when I woke up this morning and felt that familiar phantom hip pain that’s been dogging me since coming home, a sliver of doubt struck in my head. What if my hip’s bad? What if I screw it up even more? What if it’s a sign telling me not to run? I then looked outside, and it was grey, cloudy, and cold – I couldn’t possibly got out in that. Last year, this time, I would have been out there like nothing, but now, after not running for five weeks, and after the last run I had where I spent nearly five hours running in the cold rain, I fear the rain.

Really, though, it’s all just a bunch of excuses. I could totally be running, could be out with my favourite running chicks, out getting a much-needed dose of endorphins surging through my veins. But for some reason, I just can’t seem to get my head (or feet!) past the excuses. I am officially in a funk – a running funk!

How do you get out of a running funk?

One thing’s for sure though, I’m going to have to do something if I continue to eat desserts like these:

Neuhaus chocolate cube = YUM!

We went out for dinner with friends last night and invited them back to our place for an over abundance of desserts: Belgian hot chocolate made with hot milk and chocolate cubes from Neuhaus Chocolates, accompanied with a Neuhaus milk chocolate – just like they do in Belgium – AND cheesecake drizzled with chocolate sauce and raspberries … seriously, I need to start running again!!!
