Head bonks and butt kicks

Wow! Have I ever been neglecting you guys! I knew it had been at least a few days since I last wrote a post, but I had no idea it had been nearly a week – and I’m not even on holidays! It’s not been for lack of things to write about, no, no, quite the opposite. But there has been a lack of time.

I know I’ve said it before, but for at least a month now, I’ve really been struggling to balance everything between work, socializing (or lack there of), diabetes, blogging, running/cycling/AJing/pilatesing/trainering, Christmas shopping, birthday shopping, and everything else that’s been going on. And unfortunately, it’s been my social life and the blog that have suffered.

My goal for next month: Regain the balance.

I totally did this yesterday!

TODAY’S RUN:

  • 8:30 a.m. BG before: 14.1 (Yowsers!)
  • Temp. basal: 0 per cent
  • Distance: 3.74 km (plus a warm-up walk beforehand and about a 1 km “cool down” walk)
  • Average pace: 6:53 min/km
  • Time: 25.:41
  • 10:45 a.m. BG after: 9.7

This morning was my first Sunday morning run since Tiffany’s a month ago, and I got to say, it was so freaking hard to pull myself out of my warm bed. I could feel the chill on my exposed face, and the bloody light wasn’t even on outside yet when the 7 a.m. alarm went off. It was pitch black. What the hell? It’s Sunday, Sunday’s are for sleeping in, NOT for being startled awake at ungodly hours of the morning (yes, 7 a.m. is ungodly).

-2 degrees is far too cold to be outside! Brrrrr!

But the thing is, running has also fallen off the mark this last month with my ongoing struggle for balance. I don’t have anything to train for right now, and I planned it that way, but without a marker in front of me, I’ve got nothing to keep me going. Sure, running is amazing for my health, but then I think, so is sleeping, which I don’t get nearly enough let me just say.

So, essentially, I needed something to kick my butt.

Meet my butt kickers:

This morning’s run was not a race-my-ass-off run, it was not a long run, it was not a competitive run. But it was a fun run. I’d been hearing all about my butt kickers Sunday a.m. runs for awhile now, and I’ll be honest, when I first heard about them, I wanted nothing to do with them. I figured they weren’t hard enough for me. These girls didn’t run with Garmins, they didn’t take fuel belts with them (what would we need that for, they said), and gels, my god, they wouldn’t even think of such a thing. But the more and more I heard about these runs, the stories told, the laughter had, the more and more I became intrigued.

You see, while these girls aren’t out to better their times, or to win a race, or to run a marathon, they are out to enjoy themselves. And that, my dear readers, is something I have been lacking on my training runs for a long, long time. When I chose not to train again for awhile, I did so with the intention of rediscovering that love I have for this sport, because I do love it, I do, it’s just kind of buried somewhere within me right now.

And this morning’s run helped take a layer of that dirt off – I mean seriously, when a run has scones and a hot cup of Mademoiselle earl grey (with ROSE petals in it!!!) midway through, how can that not be love right there 😉

Do you ever struggle with balance? How do you manage to maintain it?

  1. Oh, balance. That thing we strive for when we let ourselves be interested in too many things. It is an elusive goal.

How do I maintain it? Poorly. I tell myself that life is choices and that I can’t have everything, and that usually helps. And I usually feel good about letting go of some obligation or interest after that reminder, but then I commit to something additional. I am not a good role model. But perhaps there is a lesson to be learned from me.
